Top 100 Tips: How to Love What You Do – Every Day

Practical advice from a Lifetime Achievement Award winner who doesn’t dwell on the negatives

By Andy Stonehouse

The freedom to be his own boss is just one of the many perks of the job for Nick Golden. Traveling to Europe to play hockey with fellow RE/MAX Affiliates? Well, that’s just a bonus.

The Sales Associate with RE/MAX Professionals in St. Albert, Alberta, shares how he reached the Top 100 – he was ranked No. 60 for Canada Individuals in May 2016 – and why RE/MAX has been his home since 1990.

Nick Gold RE/MAX Top 100Understand your ‘why’

Growing up in the tightknit community of Legal, Alberta (population 900), really instilled in me some strong values, like “honesty and your word.” Both my parents passed away at young ages, and my motto has always been to make enough money to go on another holiday. So that’s what I strive for. I also wake up every single day with a positive attitude and a smile. I don’t dwell on the negatives. I throw the negatives in the garbage, put the lid on and move on quickly.

Soak up great advice

When I first started in the business, I really looked to Philip Filipchuk, a top RE/MAX Realtor in my area [and a Broker Associate with RE/MAX Professionals in St. Albert], as my inspiration. He’s a nice guy and he’s had a lot of longevity with his business. Now, I try to remain self-motivated. I just finished reading “Snakes and Ladders: A Realtor’s Journey to Success” by Ken Eddy [a RE/MAX Sales Associate in Calgary, Alberta] and I think his best advice in the book is to set yourself up in business for the long term. He says that things may not pay off immediately, so try to be consistent over a 25-year career. It’s important to be able to balance your career with your life.

Promote yourself by promoting the brand

I’ve been in real estate almost my entire working life, save for a short stint with Canada Post. In my marketplace, and I imagine most others, RE/MAX is home to the most professional Realtors. The longevity of the brand and the strength of the RE/MAX name tells a lot, and the combined effort of all RE/MAX agents to promote the network to strengthen their own business is amazing.
